  • Recovery Tips After a Bronchoscopy Procedure

You have had your bronchoscopy — well done. The procedure is over, but you are probably wondering: what should I do now? When can I eat? When will I feel normal again? As a bronchoscopy specialist who performs these procedures regularly, here is your complete recovery guide.

The First Two Hours: Take It Easy

Do not eat or drink until the numbness in your throat has completely worn off. This typically takes one to two hours. Try sipping a small amount of water first to test whether your swallow reflex has returned. With a numb throat, there is a risk of choking or aspirating food or drink into the lungs — which is why this step matters. Do not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours if you received sedation, and arrange a lift home in advance.

Day One: What Is Normal?

A sore throat similar to a mild cold is completely normal and usually resolves within 24 to 48 hours. You may cough a little, especially if biopsies were taken — this is your airways clearing themselves. Feeling tired is expected as the sedation can make you drowsy for the remainder of the day. If biopsies were taken, you may also notice tiny streaks of blood when you cough. This should be minimal and stop within a day.

What to Eat and Drink

Once the numbness has gone, begin with cool drinks such as water or juice, and soft foods such as yoghurt, soup, or mashed potato. Ice cream and ice lollies are particularly good for soothing the throat. For the first 24 hours, avoid very hot drinks, alcohol (especially if you had sedation), and crunchy or scratchy foods such as crisps or toast. By day two, you can return to your normal diet.

Managing Discomfort at Home

For a sore throat, suck throat lozenges, gargle with warm salt water, and take paracetamol if needed. A slight cough should improve over 24 to 48 hours — staying well hydrated helps clear any remaining mucus and speeds recovery.

Warning Signs: When to Seek Help Immediately

While serious complications are rare, contact me or seek emergency medical help immediately if you experience severe chest pain, difficulty breathing that is worsening, coughing up significant amounts of blood beyond minor streaks, a high fever of 38.5°C or above, or persistent vomiting. Do not wait — seek help straight away if any of these occur.

Returning to Normal Activities

On day one, rest at home and do not drive if you had sedation. By days two to three, most patients feel back to normal and can return to work and usual activities if they feel well enough. Wait at least 48 hours before returning to the gym or heavy physical work.

Getting Your Results

Results typically take one to two weeks for biopsies, and sometimes longer for specialist tests. I will contact you to discuss the findings, or we can arrange a follow-up appointment in advance if you would prefer not to wait for a phone call. Many patients find it helpful to have a results appointment booked before they leave the clinic.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does recovery take after a bronchoscopy?

Most patients feel back to normal within 24 to 48 hours. The procedure day should be spent resting at home, and the majority of people return to work the following day.

Is it normal to have a sore throat after a bronchoscopy?

Yes, completely. A sore throat similar to a mild cold is one of the most common after-effects. It typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours. Throat lozenges and paracetamol help.

Can I eat straight after a bronchoscopy?

No — you must wait until the numbness from the local anaesthetic has completely worn off before eating or drinking. This usually takes one to two hours. Sip water first to test your swallow reflex.

Is it normal to cough up blood after a bronchoscopy?

Small streaks of blood in the sputum are normal if biopsies were taken and should resolve within a day. Significant amounts of blood are not normal — seek medical help immediately if this occurs.

When will I get my bronchoscopy results?

Biopsy results typically take one to two weeks. Dr Suman Paul will contact you to discuss findings, or a follow-up appointment can be arranged in advance to review results together.
